The year was 2010, and I led the negotiation for my old group. We were renewing a service agreement with a hospital. Everyone told me it would be easy. It wasn’t. They used tactics to stoke fear in us, and it was working. Each meeting felt worse than the one before. Members were willing to give up more and more. I tried to use the tactics I learned in my MBA negotiations courses. It didn’t work. I was frustrated.
To help protect the practice, I read every book on negotiation I could find. That’s why I discovered Jim Camp’s approach to negotiation. I read his first book, Start with No, and then his second book, No. The words on the page resonated with me. Finally, things were making sense. With all my notes, I began to implement what I had read. And guess what? I saw positive results. Excited by the outcomes, I emailed Jim, thanking him for his books and help. I honestly never expected to hear back. Jim did email me back. Emails turned into phone calls. Eventually, I began I help with workshops and coaching. I learned so much from Jim about negotiations.
Unfortunately, Jim passed in 2014. However, I still work to teach others what he taught me. As a Camp team member, I am honored to continue Jim’s legacy.
